Dr. Karina España is a triple board-certified adult, child & adolescent, and forensic psychiatrist.
She graduated from medical school at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), where she received distinguished recognition for exemplary contributions to the M.D. program. Dr. España completed her general psychiatry training at OHSU, during which time she also was elected as an APA SAMHSA Minority Fellow. Dr. España completed her child & adolescent psychiatry fellowship at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), with distinction in community and global psychiatry. She served as Chief Fellow during the last year of her training at UCLA. Dr. España was honored as the recipient of the UCLA Gertrude Rogers Greenblatt Award in Child Psychiatry, given to one fellow annually noted for their “deeply human commitment to children and families requiring psychiatric care.” She then returned to OHSU to complete a forensic psychiatry fellowship.
In her clinical work, she is an Assistant Professor at OHSU. Dr. España is an Associate Program Director for OHSU’s Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship where she provides leadership in medical education. She also provides clinical services for youth admitted to the inpatient child psychiatry unit at a prominent hospital in Portland, Oregon. In this role, she works closely with a multi-disciplinary team in caring for youth and families who are experiencing a mental health crisis.
Dr. España is an accomplished psychiatrist who holds specific expertise in community mental health, healthcare inequities and high-risk youth including those with lived experiences of trauma, involvement in child welfare and/or the juvenile legal system. She participates in speaking engagements at local, regional, and national conferences. Dr. España has received numerous awards in recognition of her leadership, service and dedication to community well-being and equity. Her robust training and experiences position her as a trusted and knowledgeable consultant on psychiatric issues in legal contexts.
